Web 2.0: Lindsey Stirling

Lindsey Stirling is a hip-hop/dubstep violinist who auditioned on America's Got Talent in season five, in 2010. After being told she wasn't good enough, she began creating music videos of her music on YouTube, where she gained popularity and a large fan base. She has released two studio albums since 2012, and tours internationally.

Closing Thoughts

Lindsey Stirling's target audience is her fans of course, and isn't seemingly limited by age, gender, education, etc.

I would say that Lindsey Stirling is a wonderful example of someone who uses Web 2.0 very effectively. When she left the America's Got Talent competition, she took her passion to YouTube, which helped her build her fan base. After that, she was able to release her first album. She keeps in touch with her fans frequently on various Web 2.0 applications, making her seem more of a friend than an unreachable celebrity, at least in this fan's opinion. Her use of PledgeMusic on her second and current album is a really good illustration of that as well, because PledgeMusic is like Kickstarter for music artists. Once someone "pledges" to buy her album, they are able to receive exclusive content and updates from Lindsey as she creates the album, and this of course covers the cost of making the album, so she doesn't have to go to a major record label. In my opinion, that's almost the embodiment of using the web as a platform!
